The FAA uses three-letter codes to identify airports. So what happened when Sioux City Gateway Airport got theirs? SUX wasn’t exactly what they thought their airport should have as a destination! Airport authorities petitioned for a new code, and in a nod to the Gateway part of the name they were given GAY. Sometimes you just can’t win!
