This poem is from my small booklet called “Stations of the Cross For a New Millenium”. I feel it reflects what is happening currently in our world.
My booklet has graphics and poems that look at the 14 traditional “stations” from a modern perspective. You can read more on my website and order a free pdf copy:  https://studio-l.tripod.com/stations.htm

For the people of Ukraine who have died

Ash Wednesday: Dust thou art
And to dust thou shall return;
Put on your sackcloth, sit in the ashes and repent.

Another day, another way
Your world is turned to ashes.
Your life cut short by a madman.

As the dust rises up from the bombings
Innocent lives are ended…
A mother and child turned to ash.

The reporter’s camera presents a living tableau
Of this Ash Wednesday’s sinister meaning
When the Evil one burns bodies and souls.

Let us remember those who died needlessly.
And know that he who spread this evil
Will also eventually also turn to dust.
