I wanted to write an upbeat poem for the Christmas season but just couldn’t when I continue to see the destruction in Ukraine. What to us is a wonderful shop until you drop holiday time, for the Ukrainians this year, they will be lucky if they have a few hours of electricity and drinkable water! We, in the US, just don’t realize how good a life we have. We will be able to sit down on Christmas (or Hanukkah) with our families, fill our bellies with great food, and spend thousands of dollars on gifts! The Ukrainians have NOTHING.
.
Christmas In Ukraine 2022?
.
It’s Christmas time so we’re having fun
Buying presents and to Santa we run.
In our world of plenty the light will always shine
But for Ukraine it’s death and darkness in wartime.
.
In the world that is Ukraine there’s no tinsel or joy
Only fear and sadness for every girl and boy.
And when the Christmas bells are rung
They toll for the dead, no carols are sung.
.
This Christmas time is hard when all you have is war
When a child is born in a cellar, what future is in store?
In this world of endless destruction, can we give them more than aid
Can we help them stem the tears as they sustain another raid?
.
No crèches or presents under a glittering tree.
Their world is in rubble, no celebrations until they’re free.
So pray that the war will end and the sun shine again.
Can there be Christmas in Ukraine?
.
